Small talk tips for introverts: what to say (and how to leave)

Easy openers, a simple method to keep conversations going, and a graceful way out.

Introverts aren't bad at people. Unstructured chat with strangers in loud rooms is just tiring. A few simple scripts make it far easier.

Open with the situation

  • “Is anything here worth the wait?” (in a queue)
  • “How do you know the host?” (at a party)
  • “What brought you here tonight?” (at a work event)

Keep it going with FORD

When the chat stalls, ask about Family, Occupation, Recreation or Dreams. Then ask a second, deeper question — that's where introverts shine.

Leave gracefully

Wait for a pause, sum up something they said, give a reason and close warmly: “Great hearing about the bakery — I promised I'd say hi to the speaker. Good luck with the launch!”
