Perimenopause brain fog and rage: what's really going on
Why hormonal changes before menopause can affect memory and mood, and what helps.
Losing words mid-sentence. Snapping at people you love. If these are new, perimenopause — the years before your periods stop — may be part of the reason.
Why it happens
Oestrogen supports mood chemicals like serotonin and helps the brain use energy. When levels swing, many women notice brain fog, irritability, anxiety and poor sleep — often while periods are still regular.
What helps
- Track your symptoms for a few weeks to spot patterns.
- Protect sleep: a cool bedroom and a fixed bedtime.
- Move daily and eat protein at breakfast.
- Cut back on alcohol, which worsens sleep and mood.
- Talk to your GP about options, including HRT.
